9 June 1951

On this Date in History:

Harry S. Truman was President of the USA, Alben W. Barkley was his VP. The United States was engaged in the Korean Conflict. The top headline for the day concerned the debut of the "Doodles Weaver Show" on NBC-TV.

At the theater "An American in Paris" was voted the Best Picture, Humphrey Bogart won Best Actor for his role in "The African Queen" and Vivian Leigh took home top honors for her role in "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Radios were playing such catchy numbers as "Come On-a My House", "If", "Be My Love", "Too Young", and "Because of You."

"Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger and 'From Here to Eternity" by James Jones were in all the bookstores.

Comedy shows ruled the networks with such favorites as "I Love Lucy", "Red Skelton Show', and the "Burns and Allen Show."  Ed Sullivan was "Mr. Variety."

In the supermarket bread cost 16 cents/loaf, milk 92 cents/gal and eggs 72 cents/doz. The price of gas was 27 cents/gal and the average car cost $1,800.00. You could buy a house for $16,000.00 and mail a letter with a 3 cent stamp. The minimum wage was 75 cents/hr, the average income $4,194.00/yr and the DOW avg was 269.

And, at the Church of the Epiphany in Bellevue, PA, Bill and Fran became Mr. and Mrs. William Dorworth.

Their journey has been eventful. From a farmhouse in Mars, PA  they moved to a cape cod in Greenwich, CT and then on to Wauwatosa, WI and an old victorian house by 1960. Along the way they collected 4 children, too many cats to count and several dogs. In 1975 they made another move to Wyoming, OH were they lived in a renovated carriage house. Bill retired in 1986. Their home became the hub of a growing family as their children married and created families of their own. In 1996 they once again sold their home but this time packed up their gear in an RV ("Dolphin I") and headed for new adventures, searching for the perfect place....and today finds them with a new garden home they purchased in 2000 in Indianapolis, IN, near family but without all the maintenance hassles. A new garden is beginning to take shape....
