On this Date in History:
Harry S. Truman was President of the USA, Alben W. Barkley was his VP. The
United States was engaged in the Korean Conflict. The top headline for the day
concerned the debut of the "Doodles Weaver Show" on NBC-TV.
At the theater "An American in Paris" was voted the Best Picture,
Humphrey Bogart won Best Actor for his role in "The African Queen" and
Vivian Leigh took home top honors for her role in "A Streetcar Named
Desire."
Radios were playing such catchy numbers as "Come On-a My House",
"If", "Be My Love", "Too Young", and "Because
of You."
"Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger and 'From Here to
Eternity" by James Jones were in all the bookstores.
Comedy shows ruled the networks with such favorites as "I Love
Lucy", "Red Skelton Show', and the "Burns and Allen Show."
Ed Sullivan was "Mr. Variety."
In the supermarket bread cost 16 cents/loaf, milk 92 cents/gal and eggs 72
cents/doz. The price of gas was 27 cents/gal and the average car cost $1,800.00.
You could buy a house for $16,000.00 and mail a letter with a 3 cent stamp. The
minimum wage was 75 cents/hr, the average income $4,194.00/yr and the DOW avg
was 269.
And, at the Church of the Epiphany in Bellevue, PA, Bill and Fran became Mr.
and Mrs. William Dorworth.
Their journey has been eventful. From a farmhouse in Mars, PA they
moved to a cape cod in Greenwich, CT and then on to Wauwatosa, WI and an old
victorian house by 1960. Along the way they collected 4 children, too many cats
to count and several dogs. In 1975 they made another move to Wyoming, OH were
they lived in a renovated carriage house. Bill retired in 1986. Their home
became the hub of a growing family as their children married and created
families of their own. In 1996 they once again sold their home but this time
packed up their gear in an RV ("Dolphin I") and headed for new
adventures, searching for the perfect place....and today finds them with a new
garden home they purchased in 2000 in Indianapolis, IN, near family but without
all the maintenance hassles. A new garden is beginning to take shape....
